Mt. Kelud 2014 Eruption

Ashes materials covered the city of Yogyakarta

Okay, now I'll report about the eruption of Mt. Kelud on this February, the nearest active volcano with the city of Kediri, my sweet hometown. Honestly, I'm so sad to tell about this disaster, because my family in there was received a big damaged from. But, I have to report it because it's an important news that should be published.

Mt. Kelud, located in East Java, Indonesia erupted on Friday, February 14th 2014 at 10.50 p.m. Jakarta time (GMT +7.00). As the second most active volcano in Java Island, Mt. Kelud ejected about 1,300,000m3 of volcanic materials. This eruption is actually same with 1 month eruption of Mt. Merapi (the most active volcano in Indonesia) and 6 months eruption of Mt. Sinabung in North Sumatra (erupted from September 2013 until February 2014).

It explains how the ashes materials involved until Yogyakarta, Central Java, and some of West Java. For example, the ashes materials brought by the wind to the city of Bogor (West Java) that located about 800km away from Mt. Kelud. Moreover, some media said that the ashes materials have already blown so far away until nearest Indian Ocean (West of Sumatra). The famous 9th century budish temple, Borobudur was covered by plastic shield to protect the historical relief on the wall of this temple.

Mt. Keluds eruption noises sounded until the city of Pati (Central Java) that located about 250km away from this volcano. That massive materials and noises happened because, ‘shy eruption’ in 2007 formed a massive lock (dome) that closed the mouth of the crater. It means, this year eruption need more energy to destroy this dome, and then erupted.

It explains how the noises sounded until 250km far, and the ashes materials blown until 800km. Massive dirtythunder/volcanolighting also happened in there. Marbles-size rocks, volcanic sands, poisonous gasses, and any onther volcanic materials were ejected about 17km away to the sky of my hometown, Kediri. It caused rocks and sands rain in my grandma’s house with the massive dirtythunder. My grandma’s house located about 20km from the volcano. So close.

This disaster killed 7 peoples in several areas. About 200,000 peoples from 5 cities (Kediri, Blitar, Malang, Jombang, Batu) have evacuated. About 10 airports have been closed and 134 flights also have been canceled in just one day. Moreover, if we wanna go to the Java Island from Bali by plane, only 1 airport in there that still give that services (Soekarno-Hatta international airport, in Jakarta).

Indonesia is located in the ‘Ring of Fire’ volcanos range. For example, Sumatera, Java, and Bali Island has a lot of active volcanos because it's located in the encounters of Indo-Australia and Eurasia tectonic plate that provide space for magma to come out as the volcano. There are about 137 active volcanos in Indonesia, and 22 of them are standby to erupt right now. Including Mt. Semeru and Mt. Bromo that located near the Mt. Kelud, and also so close with my house in Jember, East Java, Indonesia.
